44 Some drugs that inhibit drug metabolism can prolong the duration of action of drugs.

When the body is constantly exposed to some drugs that are metabolized by the cytochrome P450 enzymes, the body can react by increasing the quantity of enzymes present in the liver. By increasing the capacity of the enzymes to metabolize drugs, these are called inducers of drug metabolism. Other drugs can reduce the amount of the enzymes or directly inhibit the enzymes involved. Drugs that inhibit the enzymes reduce the ability of the body to metabolize drugs. If a drug is not metabolized, this leads to an increase in the concentration of the drug within the body and therefore the drug will have a prolonged duration of action because it will be present in the body at therapeutic levels for a longer time.
